What Can I Do With This Major?

Are you trying to figure out what to major in? Are you wondering how to use your degree in the world of work? Here at Career Services, we have put our heads together to create a practical guide to majors and careers.

Explore

Explore is a four-semester personalized career development program designed to meet the specific career exploration needs of UConn sophomores and juniors. Explore can help you make educated academic and career decisions and develop skills to succeed in your future profession.

Informational Interviewing and Job Shadowing

Informational Interviewing and Job Shadowing allows for you to interview an employer about a career and learn about the day-to-day responsibilities for a certain job. You will get a better understanding of the work environment for a certain career, as well as the types of skills needed for specific occupations. It is often a student’s first formal networking opportunity.

Internships

Internships are work experiences that may be linked to an academic department or done independently. They provide a great way for students to confirm choice of major and/or career while gaining practical work experience. Internships may be done concurrently while a student is carrying a full time academic course load or may be done during the summer. To search for internship opportunities and learn how each academic department works with interns, go to www.internships.uconn.edu.

Cooperative Education

Cooperative Education (Co-op) is a structured educational program which integrates classroom learning and practical hands-on experience in a field related to a student's academic or career goals. The fundamental purpose of Cooperative Education is for students to have an opportunity to learn in real-work conditions. Co-op is a partnership among students, educational institutions, and employers, where the student works full time in lieu of attending class.

Summer Jobs & Part-time Work

Summer and part-time work opportunities are an excellent way to gain experience in the work world. It is becoming more important for college graduates to have related experience on their resumes, and an increasing number of employers use their summer programs as pipelines to full-time employment. Therefore, the time and effort you put in to searching for a summer opportunity could be of great advantage to you.

Careers for the Common Good

Careers for the Common Good (CCG) are socially responsible vocations, whose results benefit the greater good of society. Careers for the common good generally occur in the nonprofit and government sectors and tend to include an individual's personal core values.

Career Library Database

The Career Library is located in the Department of Career Services, CUE 217. The library contains over 500 resources. If you seek information, you can now search our catalog to see if resources are available. Search by keyword (i.e forensic), search by title, or search by author. Keyword is the best tool to use when you want information about a specific topic. If your search is successful, you will see a "topic code number" which appears on the spine of the book. Find that number and book on the shelf, or ask for assistance.
