What happens when I go to Career Services?

Career Question:

If you have a question, come to the Department of Career Services anytime between 11:00AM-4:00PM Monday through Friday, during the academic semester. Check our website for summer session and winter break hours. If you want your résumé reviewed, see the information at the end of this page.

When you arrive, stop at the reception desk and tell the receptionist that you would like to speak to a career counselor. Sign in on the sign-in sheet and have a seat. Work on the puzzle in the corner or grab a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. A counselor will be with you shortly.

When the counselor meets you, he/she will ask what your question is all about. Some questions have quick answers, like this scenario: Student: “I would like to learn how to write a résumé”. Counselor: “Great. Here is our résumé guide to get you started.” Some questions are bigger, like “I’m not sure what to major in.”

In Career Services we want to see each student the same day they walk in. So, we have designed a process where everyone gets a few minutes and an answer to their question, or, we make an appointment for you to come back if you have one of those “bigger” questions. We will try our best to make your return appointment as soon as we can. You can help us if you don’t wait until the last minute to ask your question, like “My grad school application is due tomorrow; can you review all my paperwork today?” That’s something that we just can’t do. You need to plan ahead, and then we can better assist you.

We have lots of great information for you in Career Services. Just stop in and ask.

Résumé:

During the academic semester, we review résumés Monday through Friday from 10:00AM-4:00PM. No appointment needed. Just walk in and tell the receptionist that you would like your résumé critiqued. You will sign up on the résumé sign-up sheet and someone will see you soon. Bring a hard copy of your résumé or print one out once you arrive. We don’t critique résumés on your laptop.

Check our website for different hours during summer session and winter break.
