Summer Jobs & Part-Time Work

Summer and part-time work opportunities are an excellent way to gain experience in the work world. It is becoming more important for college graduates to have related experience on their resumes, and an increasing number of employers use their summer programs as pipelines to full-time employment. Therefore, the time and effort you put in to searching for a summer opportunity could be of great advantage to you.

Tips on Summer Employment

  • Begin thinking about your summer job search as early as the fall semester preceding the summer you hope to find employment. Many employers begin the process of hiring summer employees in September, with application deadline dates in January and February. Their message is clear: it's never too early.
  • Become familiar with the resources in the Career Resource Library. Specific job listings, national and regional employer directories, and employer literature are all available to assist you in making initial contacts with individuals working in a field and/or organization of interest to you.
  • Have your resume critiqued by a member of the Career Services' staff.
  • Meet with a career consultant who can offer advice on your job search and possibly refer you to available positions.
  • Check out internet sites related to internships and summer job opportunities through the www.internships.uconn.edu website.
  • Register with HuskyCareerLink via Career Services and view internship & part-time career-related opportunities for UConn students.
  • Network with everyone you know and tell them about the type of opportunity and organization of interest to you.
